New Delhi [India], July 22 (ANI): Congress’ Rajya Sabha MP Akhilesh Prasad Singh on Tuesday called for the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Centre to “intervene” and appoint Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar back to his post following the latter’s resignation.
“This is very shocking, and the ruling party should intervene in this and appoint him back,” Singh told the media.
The Congress leader recalled his last meeting with Vice President Dhankar, claiming he met him at 5:30 on Monday, just a few hours before the VP released the official letter of resignation on social media. He said that the VP had discussed the issue regarding Justice Varma, who was indicted in an in-house inquiry.
“I don’t have information on where it was signed, but I met him at 5:30 pm, and he was in a good mood. His only concern used to be that the debate should take place in some way and the House should function properly. He also discussed Justice Varma’s case when Pramod Tiwari and I were sitting in his chambers. He had called the Secretary General and asked him to confirm whether something had come in the Lok Sabha or not,” the Congress leader told reporters.
Multiple Congress leaders have called into question the “sudden” and “shocking” resignation of Dhankar.
Congress leader Pramod Tiwari also expressed shock over the resignation, calling it a “dark day” in parliamentary history, as a VP is unable to complete their term.
“This is shocking. I would urge him to reconsider. He was well-versed in parliamentary knowledge and served as a voice for the farmers. This is a dark day in parliamentary history when a Vice President is unable to complete his term,” Tiwari told ANI.
Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury also questioned the cited health reasons for the resignation, saying that there is actually a “virus in the

“If his health has deteriorated, he could have been admitted to AIIMS. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar is a Jaat, everything is fine, but there is a strange virus in the BJP,” she told reporters.
Both MPs in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have given notices for a motion to remove Justice Yashwant Varma, who was indicted by an in-house inquiry committee after semi-burnt wads of cash were found in his residence following a fire incident. A committee is likely to be constituted to probe the allegations, according to sources.
The sources said the committee is likely to include a judge of the Supreme Court, a chief justice from any of the High Courts and a distinguished jurist.
Dhankhar, who is also Chairman of Rajya Sabha, sent his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu on July 21.
The letter read, “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the constitution.” (ANI)
